105. Al-Fil

The Elephant · Meccan · 5 verses · Revelation order 19

الفيل

The Surah derives its name from the word ashab al fil in the very first verse.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

105:1

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ

Saheeh International

Have you not considered, [O Muḥammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?

Wahiduddin Khan

Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the people of the elephant

Shabbir Ahmed

Are you not aware of how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant

105:2

أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِي تَضۡلِيلࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Did He not make their plan into misguidance?

Wahiduddin Khan

Did He not foil their strategy

Shabbir Ahmed

Did He not bring their strategy to utter failure

105:3

وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ

Saheeh International

And He sent against them birds in flocks,

and send against them flocks of birds

And sent upon them swarms of flying creatures

105:4

تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةࣲ مِّن سِجِّيلࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Striking them with stones of hard clay,

Wahiduddin Khan

which pelted them with clay stones

Then you showered them with hard stones earmarked with requital. ('Sijjil' = Inscribed = Marked out)

105:5

فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفࣲ مَّأۡكُولِۭ

Saheeh International

And He made them like eaten straw.

Thus He made them like stubble cropped by cattle

And made them like a field of grain eaten down to stubble
