82. Al-Infitar

The Cleaving · Meccan · 19 verses · Revelation order 82

الإنفطار

It is derived from the word infatarat in the first verse. Infitar is an infinitive which means to cleave or split asunder, thereby implying that it is the Surah in which the splitting asunder of the sky has been mentioned.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

82:1

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ

Saheeh International

When the sky breaks apart

Wahiduddin Khan

When the sky is cleft asunder

Shabbir Ahmed

When the sky is shattered. (The conquest of the high Space will begin)

82:2

وَإِذَا ٱلۡكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the stars fall, scattering,

Wahiduddin Khan

and when the stars are scattered

And when the planets are dispersed. (Some of them are counted and named)

82:3

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the seas are erupted

Wahiduddin Khan

when the seas overflow

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the oceans will overflow with traffic

82:4

وَإِذَا ٱلۡقُبُورُ بُعۡثِرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the [contents of] graves are scattered [i.e., exposed],

and when the graves are laid open

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the hidden things in the earth are overturned. (The earth will be excavated for Archaeology)

82:5

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسࣱ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ وَأَخَّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.

Wahiduddin Khan

then everyone will know what he has sent ahead, and what he has left behind

Shabbir Ahmed

A 'Self' will know what it has done and what it has left undone. (Psychology will make strides)

82:6

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡكَرِيمِ

Saheeh International

O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,

Wahiduddin Khan

O man! What is it that lures you away from your bountiful Sustainer

Shabbir Ahmed

O Man! What has lured you away from your Sustainer, the Bountiful

82:7

ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ

Saheeh International

Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?

Wahiduddin Khan

who created you, fashioned you and proportioned you

Shabbir Ahmed

Who created you, then fashioned you, then proportioned you

82:8

فِيٓ أَيِّ صُورَةࣲ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ

Saheeh International

In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.

Wahiduddin Khan

in whatever form He pleased

Shabbir Ahmed

Having shaped you and put you together well in accordance with His Laws

82:9

كَلَّا بَلۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ

Saheeh International

No! But you deny the Recompense.

Wahiduddin Khan

Yet you deny the Last Judgement

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, but you deny the Judgment and the Divine System of life. ('Deen' = Divine System = Final Judgment = Way of life = Erroneously, but frequently translated as religion)

82:10

وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَحَٰفِظِينَ

Saheeh International

And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers,

Wahiduddin Khan

Surely, there are guardians watching over you

Behold, there are above you guardians ever-vigilant

82:11

كِرَامࣰ ا كَٰتِبِينَ

Saheeh International

Noble and recording;

Wahiduddin Khan

Noble, recording

82:12

يَعۡلَمُونَ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ

Saheeh International

They know whatever you do.

Wahiduddin Khan

who know all that you do

Shabbir Ahmed

They know whatever you do. (Verses 10, 11, 12, refer to the Divine Law of Requital)

82:13

إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,

Wahiduddin Khan

the virtuous will dwell in bliss

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, the virtuous who create room for others in the society, will be in Bliss

82:14

وَإِنَّ ٱلۡفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.

Wahiduddin Khan

whereas the wicked will be in Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

And behold, those who split humanity will face an Insurmountable Barrier

82:15

يَصۡلَوۡنَهَا يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ

Saheeh International

They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense,

which they shall enter on the Day of Judgement

Shabbir Ahmed

They will be visibly exposed to it on the Day of Judgment

82:16

وَمَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ

Saheeh International

And never therefrom will they be absent.

Wahiduddin Khan

and from which they will find no escape

Shabbir Ahmed

And will not be able to abscond from it

82:17

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ

Saheeh International

And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?

Wahiduddin Khan

What will make you realize what the Day of Judgement will be

And what will enlighten you about the Day of Judgment

82:18

ثُمَّ مَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ

Saheeh International

Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?

Wahiduddin Khan

Again: what will make you realize what the Day of Judgement will be

Again, what will enlighten you about the Day of Judgment

82:19

يَوۡمَ لَا تَمۡلِكُ نَفۡسࣱ لِّنَفۡسࣲ شَيۡـࣰٔ اۖ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلَّهِ

Saheeh International

It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allāh.

Wahiduddin Khan

It will be a Day when no human being shall be of the least avail to any other human being, God [alone] will hold command on that Day

That is the Day when no person will have the power to help another. For, on that Day (it will become obvious) that all Command belongs to Allah alone
