81. At-Takwir

التكوير

It is derived from the word kuwwirat in the first verse. Kuwwirat is passive voice from takwir in the past tense, and means 'that which is folded up', thereby implying that it is a Surah in which the 'folding up' has been mentioned.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

81:1

إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

Wahiduddin Khan

When the sun is folded up

Shabbir Ahmed

When the Sun is folded up. (Monarchies come to an end)

81:2

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

Wahiduddin Khan

and when the stars lose their light

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the stars lose their glow. (Tribal dictatorships fall)

81:3

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the mountains are removed

Wahiduddin Khan

and when the mountains are moved

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the mountains are moved (The 'great ones' lose their stronghold (20:105), (5)

81:4

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

Wahiduddin Khan

when ten-month pregnant camels are left untended

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the she-camels, ten months with the young, are abandoned. (A she-camel about to deliver the young has been a precious commodity, but the means of transportation will change)

81:5

وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the wild beasts are gathered

Wahiduddin Khan

and when all beasts are gathered together

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the wild beasts are herded together. (The nomads and even the cannibals civilize and lead an organized collective life)

81:6

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the seas are filled with flame

Wahiduddin Khan

and when the seas are set on fire

And when the seas bustle with ships

81:7

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the souls are paired

Wahiduddin Khan

when the souls are divided into different classes

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the people intermingle. (The world becomes a smaller place)

81:8

وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

Wahiduddin Khan

and when the female infant buried alive is asked

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the little girl that was buried alive is made to ask

81:9

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبࣲ قُتِلَتۡ

Saheeh International

For what sin she was killed

Wahiduddin Khan

for what sin she was killed

Shabbir Ahmed

For what crime she was slain. (Women's rights will be restored)

81:10

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]

Wahiduddin Khan

when the records of men's deeds are laid open

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the papers are published widely

81:11

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when the sky is stripped away

Wahiduddin Khan

when the sky is unveiled

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the sky is unveiled. (The Space sciences advance)

81:12

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

Wahiduddin Khan

and when Hell is set ablaze

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the Blazing Fire is ignited. (The guilty are swiftly apprehended)

81:13

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ

Saheeh International

And when Paradise is brought near,

Wahiduddin Khan

when Paradise is brought close

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the Paradise is brought near. (A glimpse of it on the earth)

81:14

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسࣱ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

Saheeh International

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

Wahiduddin Khan

[then] each soul shall know what it has put forward

Shabbir Ahmed

(Then) every person will see what he has prepared

81:15

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ

Saheeh International

So I swear by the retreating stars -

Wahiduddin Khan

I swear by the receding stars

Shabbir Ahmed

Oh, but I call to witness the revolving planets

81:16

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ

Saheeh International

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

Wahiduddin Khan

the planets that run their course and set

Shabbir Ahmed

The stars which rise and set in their orbits

81:17

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ

Saheeh International

And by the night as it closes in

Wahiduddin Khan

and the night that falls

Shabbir Ahmed

And the Night as it slowly closes upon

81:18

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

Saheeh International

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

Wahiduddin Khan

and the first breath of morning

Shabbir Ahmed

And the fresh breath of the morning

81:19

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولࣲ كَرِيمࣲ‏

Saheeh International

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

Wahiduddin Khan

Truly, this is the word brought by a noble messenger

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, this indeed is the revealed Word in the dialect of a noble Messenger

81:20

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينࣲ‏

Saheeh International

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

Wahiduddin Khan

endowed with power and held in honour by the Lord of the Throne

Shabbir Ahmed

Strengthened by Him Who is enthroned in His Almightiness of Supreme Control

81:21

مُّطَاعࣲ ثَمَّ أَمِينࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

Wahiduddin Khan

who is obeyed there and is worthy of trust

Shabbir Ahmed

(The Messenger is) to be obeyed and trusted

81:22

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.

Wahiduddin Khan

Your companion is not one possessed

Shabbir Ahmed

For, this fellow-man of yours is not a madman

81:23

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ

Saheeh International

And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.

Wahiduddin Khan

he truly beheld him [the angel] on the clear horizon

Shabbir Ahmed

And, indeed, he has found Wisdom at its highest horizon

81:24

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

Wahiduddin Khan

He is not avid of the Unseen

Shabbir Ahmed

And he withholds not in secret the least bit of the Revelation

81:25

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنࣲ رَّجِيمࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

Wahiduddin Khan

Nor is this the word of an outcast devil

Shabbir Ahmed

Nor is it the utterance of a rejected satanic force. (Such as desire)

81:26

فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ

Saheeh International

So where are you going?

Wahiduddin Khan

So where are you going

Shabbir Ahmed

Which way, then, are you going

81:27

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرࣱ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Saheeh International

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

Wahiduddin Khan

This is merely a reminder to all mankind

Shabbir Ahmed

This Message is no less than a Reminder and giver of eminence to all mankind

81:28

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ

Saheeh International

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

Wahiduddin Khan

to every one of you who wishes to tread the straight path

Shabbir Ahmed

Unto everyone of you who wills to walk aright

81:29

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Saheeh International

And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.

Wahiduddin Khan

But you cannot will it unless God, the Lord of the Universe, so wills it [to show you that way]

Shabbir Ahmed

But you cannot will it unless you abide by the Laws of the Lord of the Worlds
