عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
About what are they asking one another?

The Tidings · Meccan · 40 verses · Revelation order 80
The Surah derived its name from the word an-Naba in the second verse. This is not only a name but also a title of its subject matter, for Naba implies the news of Resurrection and Hereafter and the whole Surah is devoted to the same theme.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
About what are they asking one another?
What are they asking each other about
What are they asking about
عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
About the great news -
About the awesome tidings [of resurrection]
About the Great News
ٱلَّذِي هُمۡ فِيهِ مُخۡتَلِفُونَ
That over which they are in disagreement.
concerning which they are in disagreement
On which they disagree
كَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُونَ
No! They are going to know.
But they will soon come to know
Nay, they will soon come to know
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعۡلَمُونَ
Then, no! They are going to know.
Surely, they will soon find out the truth
Nay, again, they will soon come to know
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِهَٰدࣰ ا
Have We not made the earth a resting place?
Have We not spread the earth like a bed
Did We not make the earth a cradle for you
وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَوۡتَادࣰ ا
And the mountains as stakes?
and raised the mountains like supporting poles
And the mountains as pegs
وَخَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجࣰ ا
And We created you in pairs.
We created you in pairs
And We have created you in pairs
وَجَعَلۡنَا نَوۡمَكُمۡ سُبَاتࣰ ا
And made your sleep [a means for] rest
and gave you repose in sleep
And We have made sleep so that you can rest
وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلَّيۡلَ لِبَاسࣰ ا
And made the night as clothing.
and the night as a cover
And We have made the night as a cloak
وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشࣰ ا
And made the day for livelihood.
and made the day for earning a livelihood
And made the day, life. ('Ma'ash' = Economy = Subsistence = All activities of life = The state of living)
وَبَنَيۡنَا فَوۡقَكُمۡ سَبۡعࣰ ا شِدَادࣰ ا
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens].
We have built above you seven mighty heavens
And We have built above you seven Cosmic Systems
وَجَعَلۡنَا سِرَاجࣰ ا وَهَّاجࣰ ا
And made [therein] a burning lamp
and We have set therein a glowing lamp
And We have placed a Dazzling Lamp
وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلۡمُعۡصِرَٰتِ مَآءࣰ ثَجَّاجࣰ ا
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.
From the rain clouds We send waters pouring down in abundance
And We send down from the rainy clouds abundant water
لِّنُخۡرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبࣰّ ا وَنَبَاتࣰ ا
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.
so that We may bring forth thereby grain and a variety of plants
Thereby to bring forth grain and plant
وَجَنَّٰتٍ أَلۡفَافًا
And gardens of entwined growth.
and gardens dense with foliage
And gardens of dense foliage
إِنَّ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ كَانَ مِيقَٰتࣰ ا
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -
Surely, the Day of Judgement has an appointed time
Behold, the Day of Decision is a thing appointed
يَوۡمَ يُنفَخُ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأۡتُونَ أَفۡوَاجࣰ ا
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes
On that Day when the trumpet shall be sounded, you shall come in droves
A Day when the Trumpet is blown, and you come in throngs
وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ أَبۡوَٰبࣰ ا
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.
and the heaven shall be opened, and become gates
When the gates of the sky are flung open. (Mankind learn about the high space)
وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ فَكَانَتۡ سَرَابًا
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.
and the mountains shall be made to vanish, as if they had been a mirage
And the 'great ones' lose power as if they were mirage. (20:105), (56:5), (
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتۡ مِرۡصَادࣰ ا
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait
Surely, Hell lies in wait
Behold, Hell lurks in ambush
لِّلطَّٰغِينَ مَـَٔابࣰ ا
For the transgressors, a place of return,
a home for the transgressors
A home for the transgressors
لَّٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحۡقَابࣰ ا
In which they will remain for ages [unending].
where they shall remain for ages
They will abide in it for ages. (Hell is not forever. Allah's Grace comes to rescue the dwellers of the Hellfire (6:128), (11:107), (40:12). While the abode of Paradise is Eternal
لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرۡدࣰ ا وَلَا شَرَابًا
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.
and where they will taste neither coolness nor any drink
Therein they taste not coolness of comfort nor drink of satisfaction
إِلَّا حَمِيمࣰ ا وَغَسَّاقࣰ ا
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -
save boiling water and a stinking fluid
Only burning anguish and ice-cold darkness
جَزَآءࣰ وِفَاقًا
An appropriate recompense.
a fitting requital
A befitting requital
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ لَا يَرۡجُونَ حِسَابࣰ ا
Indeed, they were not expecting an account
for they never expected to be called to account
For, behold, they never hoped to be held accountable
وَكَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كِذَّابࣰ ا
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.
and they rejected outright Our signs
And they called Our Messages false with an adamant denial
وَكُلَّ شَيۡءٍ أَحۡصَيۡنَٰهُ كِتَٰبࣰ ا
But all things We have enumerated in writing.
but We have recorded everything in a Book
But We place on Record everything
فَذُوقُواْ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمۡ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
[So We shall say], "Taste, then, [the fruit of your evil doings,] for now We shall bestow on you nothing but more and more suffering
So, now, taste nothing but increasing punishment
إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment -
As for those who are mindful of God, they shall surely triumph
Behold, there is supreme fulfillment for those who walk aright
حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعۡنَٰبࣰ ا
Gardens and grapevines.
theirs shall be gardens and vineyards
Beautiful gardens and vineyards
وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتۡرَابࣰ ا
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age.
and young maidens of equal age
And splendid companions, well-matched
وَكَأۡسࣰ ا دِهَاقࣰ ا
And a full cup.
and overflowing cups
And a cup of delight overflowing
لَّا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوࣰ ا وَلَا كِذَّٰبࣰ ا
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -
There they shall not hear any idle talk, or any untruth
They shall hear no senseless talk, nor falsification therein
جَزَآءࣰ مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابࣰ ا
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,
all this will be a recompense, a gift, that will suffice them, from your Lord
Reward from your Lord, a generous gift
رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِۖ لَا يَمۡلِكُونَ مِنۡهُ خِطَابࣰ ا
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.
the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, the most Gracious [and] none shall have it in their power to raise their voices to Him
Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is in between them, the Beneficent. None has the power to lecture Him
يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ صَفࣰّ اۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنۡ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابࣰ ا
The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in ranks, no one will speak, except for those to whom the Lord of Mercy gives permission, and who will say only what is right
On the Day when the Divine Energy and the Universal forces stand forth in ranks, none will speak but he whom the Beneficent allows and say only what is right
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا
That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.
That Day is sure to come, so whoever wishes to, let him take the path that leads towards his Lord
That Day will be the Moment of Truth. So whoever wills, let him take the path that leads toward his Sustainer
إِنَّآ أَنذَرۡنَٰكُمۡ عَذَابࣰ ا قَرِيبࣰ ا يَوۡمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلۡكَافِرُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَٰبَۢا
Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
We have warned you of a chastisement which is near at hand, on the Day when man shall [clearly] see what his hands have sent ahead, and when he who has denied the truth shall say, "Oh, would that I were dust
Behold, We warn you of a retribution near at hand. A Day when every person will see what his own hands have sent forth. And when the denier of the Truth will say, "Oh, I wish I were mere dust
