79. An-Nazi'at

Those who drag forth · Meccan · 46 verses · Revelation order 81

النازعات

It is derived from the word wan-nazi`at with which the Surah opens.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

79:1

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقࣰ ا

Saheeh International

By those [angels] who extract with violence

Wahiduddin Khan

By [the winds] that pluck out vehemently

Shabbir Ahmed

Consider those who dive to bring up. (Pearls from the ocean. People from repression)

79:2

وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطࣰ ا

Saheeh International

And [by] those who remove with ease

Wahiduddin Khan

and those that blow gently

Shabbir Ahmed

And move steadily in jubilation, releasing (the oppressed from bondage)

79:3

وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحࣰ ا

Saheeh International

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming

Wahiduddin Khan

and by [the clouds] that swim serenely and

Shabbir Ahmed

And working hard, swimming in strides

79:4

فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقࣰ ا

Saheeh International

And those who race each other in a race

Wahiduddin Khan

by those that outstrip them suddenly

Shabbir Ahmed

And then together racing to progress

79:5

فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرࣰ ا

Saheeh International

And those who arrange [each] matter,

Wahiduddin Khan

and by those who regulate events

Shabbir Ahmed

And thus taking charge of their matters

79:6

يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ

Saheeh International

On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],

Wahiduddin Khan

On the Day when a violent convulsion will convulse [the world]

Shabbir Ahmed

The Day when the tremulous trembles

79:7

تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ

Saheeh International

There will follow it the subsequent [one].

Wahiduddin Khan

to be followed by further [convulsions]

Shabbir Ahmed

To be followed by the jolter. (The oppressors are shaken up again and again)

79:8

قُلُوبࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَاجِفَةٌ

Saheeh International

Hearts, that Day, will tremble,

Wahiduddin Khan

hearts will be throbbing

Shabbir Ahmed

Some hearts throb on that Day

79:9

أَبۡصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Their eyes humbled.

Wahiduddin Khan

while eyes will be downcast

Shabbir Ahmed

Their eyes subdued

79:10

يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرۡدُودُونَ فِي ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ

Saheeh International

They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?

Wahiduddin Khan

They say, "What? shall we be brought back to life

Shabbir Ahmed

They say, "What! Shall we ever be returned to the ditch of anonymity?" ('Hufrah' = Ditch = Not noteworthy = Lowly = Unremarkable = Insignificant)

79:11

أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمࣰ ا نَّخِرَةࣰ‏

Saheeh International

Even if we should be decayed bones?"

Wahiduddin Khan

even after we have turned into decayed bones

Shabbir Ahmed

Shall we ever weaken to skeletal strength

79:12

قَالُواْ تِلۡكَ إِذࣰ ا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."

Wahiduddin Khan

and they say, "That indeed would be a losing return

Shabbir Ahmed

And they say, "In that case, then, it would be an investment of loss

79:13

فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, it will be but one shout,

Wahiduddin Khan

But all it will take is a single blast

Shabbir Ahmed

But finally, it is a single swift call

79:14

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ

Saheeh International

And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.

Wahiduddin Khan

and behold! They will all come out in the open

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, they will be awakened

79:15

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ

Saheeh International

Has there reached you the story of Moses? -

Wahiduddin Khan

Have you heard the story of Moses

Shabbir Ahmed

Has the story of Moses reached you? (Such a Revolution occurred in his times)

79:16

إِذۡ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى

Saheeh International

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,

Wahiduddin Khan

His Lord called out to him by the sacred valley of Tuwa

Shabbir Ahmed

When his Lord called him in the Sacred Valley of Revelation (18:6)

79:17

ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ

Saheeh International

"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

Wahiduddin Khan

[saying], "Go to Pharaoh, he has exceeded all bounds

Shabbir Ahmed

Go to Pharaoh. Behold, he has crossed all bounds of decency

79:18

فَقُلۡ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ

Saheeh International

And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself

Wahiduddin Khan

and say, 'Will you reform yourself

Shabbir Ahmed

And ask him, "Are you willing to be a better person?" ('Zaku' = Grow in goodness = Develop the 'Self' = Get rid of evil behavior = Attain purity = Improve in conduct = Prime the 'Self' for actualization)

79:19

وَأَهۡدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشَىٰ

Saheeh International

And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"

Wahiduddin Khan

Do you want me to guide you to your Lord, so that you should fear Him

Shabbir Ahmed

Then I will guide you to your Lord so that you will have some idea of His awesome Glory

79:20

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلۡأٓيَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ

Saheeh International

And he showed him the greatest sign,

Wahiduddin Khan

Moses showed him the great sign

Shabbir Ahmed

And then he presented to him the tremendous evidence of the Truth

79:21

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ

Saheeh International

But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.

Wahiduddin Khan

but he denied it and refused [the faith]

Shabbir Ahmed

But he denied and haughtily rejected

79:22

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعَىٰ

Saheeh International

Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].

Wahiduddin Khan

Then he quickly turned his back

Shabbir Ahmed

Then turned he away briskly

79:23

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ

Saheeh International

And he gathered [his people] and called out.

Wahiduddin Khan

And he summoned all his people

Shabbir Ahmed

Then gathered (his chiefs) and called (his people)

79:24

فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ

Saheeh International

And said, "I am your most exalted lord."

Wahiduddin Khan

and proclaimed, "I am your supreme Lord

Shabbir Ahmed

And proclaimed, "I am your Lord, the Highest

79:25

فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ

Saheeh International

So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]..

Wahiduddin Khan

but God seized him and meted out to him the chastisement of both the next world and the present

Shabbir Ahmed

So Allah took him to task, and made him an example for the later generations and the ones who soon followed

79:26

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةࣰ لِّمَن يَخۡشَىٰٓ

Saheeh International

Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].

Wahiduddin Khan

surely there is in this a lesson for the God-fearing

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, herein is indeed a lesson for him who fears (violating the Divine Law)

79:27

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ بَنَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.

Wahiduddin Khan

[O Men!] Are you more difficult to create than the heaven which He has built

Shabbir Ahmed

What! Are you the more difficult to create or is the heaven that He built

79:28

رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا

Saheeh International

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.

Wahiduddin Khan

by raising its vault high and fashioning it flawlessly

Shabbir Ahmed

He raised high its canopy, and shaped it perfect

79:29

وَأَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَأَخۡرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

Wahiduddin Khan

and making its night dark and bringing forth its morning light

Shabbir Ahmed

And He made dark its night and its splendor He brings out

79:30

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ

Saheeh International

And after that He spread the earth.

Wahiduddin Khan

and the earth which He spread out

Shabbir Ahmed

And after that He made the earth shoot out from the Cosmic Nebula and made it spread out egg-shaped. ('Dahaha' entails all the meanings rendered (21)

79:31

أَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

He extracted from it its water and its pasture,

Wahiduddin Khan

after that bringing forth from it its water and its pasture land

Shabbir Ahmed

And produced from it its own water and pasture

79:32

وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَرۡسَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

And the mountains He set firmly

Wahiduddin Khan

and making the mountains firm

Shabbir Ahmed

And the mountains He firmly fixed

79:33

مَتَٰعࣰ ا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ

Saheeh International

As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

Wahiduddin Khan

[all this] as a means of sustenance for you and your animals

Shabbir Ahmed

A means of livelihood for you and your cattle

79:34

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ

Saheeh International

But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -

Wahiduddin Khan

When the great over-whelming event arrives

Shabbir Ahmed

And so, when there comes the Great Event

79:35

يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ

Saheeh International

The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,

Wahiduddin Khan

on the Day that man remembers what he strove for

Shabbir Ahmed

On that Day man will remember all that he has ever done. (53:3)

79:36

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ

Saheeh International

And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -

Wahiduddin Khan

and Hell is there for all to see

Shabbir Ahmed

And the Insurmountable Barrier will stand before him who finds it before him (he failed to prime his 'Self' for the felicitous development in the Hereafter (29:54), (39)

79:37

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ

Saheeh International

So as for he who transgressed

Wahiduddin Khan

anyone who has acted arrogantly

Shabbir Ahmed

Then, the one who rebelled against the Divine Laws

79:38

وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا

Saheeh International

And preferred the life of the world,

Wahiduddin Khan

and prefers the life of this world

Shabbir Ahmed

And fell for instant gratifications, ('Hayat-id-duniya' = Life of this world = Short term = Instant gains = Disregard of the life to come)

79:39

فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ

Saheeh International

Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.

Wahiduddin Khan

will find himself in Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, the (foot of) the Insurmountable Barrier will be his home

79:40

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ

Saheeh International

But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

Wahiduddin Khan

but one who fears to stand before his Lord and restrained himself from base desires

Shabbir Ahmed

But the one who feared standing before his Sustainer and restrained his selfish desire

79:41

فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ

Saheeh International

Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.

Wahiduddin Khan

shall dwell in Paradise

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, the Paradise will be his home

79:42

يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?

Wahiduddin Khan

They will ask you [Prophet] about the Hour, saying, "When it will come to pass

Shabbir Ahmed

They ask you of the Hour, "When will it come to pass

79:43

فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ

Saheeh International

In what [position] are you that you should mention it?

Wahiduddin Khan

what have you to do with the mentioning of it

Shabbir Ahmed

Why? What do you have to tell them about it? (7:187), (3)

79:44

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ

Saheeh International

To your Lord is its finality.

Wahiduddin Khan

Your Lord alone knows when it will come

Shabbir Ahmed

Unto your Lord is the culmination of it

79:45

إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

You are only a warner for those who fear it.

Wahiduddin Khan

you are but a warner for those who fear it

Shabbir Ahmed

You are but a Warner unto him who stands in awe of it

79:46

كَأَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوۡ ضُحَىٰهَا

Saheeh International

It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.

Wahiduddin Khan

On the Day when they see it, they will feel as if they had tarried in this world for only one evening or one morning

Shabbir Ahmed

On the Day when they see it, it will be as if they had lived no longer than an evening or its morning
